MARCUS Ng of Port Moresby has emerged as the new champion of the Kimbe Snooker Open Championship, held over the weekend in Kimbe.
In front of a packed crowd at the San Remo Club on Sunday afternoon, Ng defeated top-ranking player Djourne Fong 4-2 in the grand final of the tournament.
Out of 32 participants, both Ng and Fong showcased their skills, making their way into the top 16. With a combination of experience and talent, they continued their winning streak into the quarterfinals before facing off against Nathan Fong and Marcus Rahman in the semi-finals.
The semi-finals were a do-or-die situation for all four players, each eager to reach the grand final. However, Djourne Fong proved too strong for Marcus Rahman, while Marcus Ng outsmarted Nathan Fong. Ng then went on to defeat Djourne Fong in the final, claiming the championship cup along with prize money of K4,000.
Runners-up Djourne Fong received K2,000 and a trophy, while Marcus Rahman secured third place, earning K1,000 and a trophy. Nathan Fong finished in fourth place and received K500 and a trophy.
Cue Sports Association president Joh Sitapai expressed gratitude to all participants, emphasizing their commitment to promoting cue sports in the province.
“We can’t thank you enough. Please accept this small gift from our hearts. To all the outstation players — Marcus Rahman, Marcus Ng, Djourne, Chris So’onwai—and my fellow 25 local players, we couldn’t have delivered this event without your dedication and passion,” Sitapai stated.
He acknowledged the challenges faced during the event but expressed pride that the championship ran smoothly under the direction of tournament director Joe Chan.
