THE 2021 Kumul Petroleum National School Rugby League Championship kicked-off yesterday in Port Moresby with all four regions of PNG present.
The Oil Search National Football Stadium hosted the event with boys’ under-14 division.
It was an interesting event where young children competing and displaying their rugby league skills on the field for the whole of yesterday.
Heading into the finals as predicted the Highlands region who were the heavy weights with greater heights and ball games crushed out the Northern region 22-6. While Southern who are the host defeated NGI to claim the third placing. Highlands region team coach Ricky Sawavi is glad his side claimed the males under 14 title.
Playing over five games the young boys were exhausted, but have to push beyond their limits where a couple of them burnt out their muscles resulting in minor injuries. Some of the young players even had to stay on the field under the watchful eyes of their trainers until the full time.
Moreover, Trukai Industries was happy to assist the 2021 championship with K60, 000 towards the building of future sports men and women of PNG.
Trukai Brand Manager Casey Kwasam said this was one of the many contributions trukai had done towards sports in the country.
“We’ve sponsored many sporting events and programs. We also have been contributing to assist PNG athletes in the international level,” Kwasam said.
PNGRFL President Stanley Hondina thanked Trukai Industries and its staff for the assistance made towards the development of young children through rugby league.
The championship will continue on today with the under 16 boys followed by under 18 on Friday September 24, 2021 and will conclude by Saturday September 25, 2021 with under 18 girls.
Spectators are allowed to attend the event to cheer behind the young rugby league players who are in Port Moresby representing their regions. Ticket are selling at the gates. Student with ID cards, K2.00 and K5. 00 for adults.
