THE 2025 Kokoda challenge has been a successful one for the local fighter David Ome as he defeated his Australian opponent Kobe Hunt in 51 kilogram division during the international bout held at Lamana Gold club on Saturday 19 of April 2025.
Ome showcased resilience and confidence in the boxing ring while keeping his stamina going for the three rounds.
His well-coordinated and well-structured moves in the ring has led him to claim the 51kg title.
Kobe Hunt is a three-time champion under 51kg weight in Australia and was his first time to come and take the ring with Ome.
Preparation was done two to three months ahead for the match that ended with a win giving Ome another win for his fights.
“I was confident and focus in the ring without being distracted by the cheerful crowds. I got my eyes fixed on my opponent while on high alert on the incoming punches,” he said.
Ome’s victory gives credit to the National Coach Mark Keto and Assistant coach Jack Willie for making sure fighters of Ome’s Caliber are well equipped with necessary skills to survive the harshness of the ring.
As the representative of Defense Boxing club in National Capital District (NCD), Ome is slowing fulfilling his dream, having two international fights victory and one national championship title.
While having his dream to one day represent Papua New Guinea (PNG) Commonwealth games, Ome has one job to do and that is to defend his 48kg division national championship title in Lae come July.
“I claimed the 48Kg title last year during the national championships in Port Moresby defeating Lesley Gafa,” he said.
Ome said that the national Championship will be a very tough match and he is getting himself prepared for the fight that is months away.
He thanked the good Lord for the abundant blessings, guidance and protections and the breath of life that allowed him to wake up every morning to embrace challenges each day as he looks forward to continue achieving his dreams in the realm of Armature Boxing.
