DAVID Ome from Popondetta claimed his first gold medal from the recent National Boxing Championships in Port Moresby.
Ome was the first boxer to lead team NCD by claiming gold medal after defeating Lesliy Gaffa from team Misima in Milne Bay province on the mens 48kg division.
Ome’s gold medal adds to the tally of 8 gold medals, 6 silver and three bronze, which team NCD won during the National Championships.
As a representative of Defense Club in Port Moresby and team NCD, Ome thanked the National Coach Mark Keto for his time and effort in nurturing him during the preparation stage for the National Championships.
After winning gold medal in the national championships, Ome is looking forward for an immense preparation for Oceania championships next year (2025).
“I’m really happy to take part in the National Championships because next year around March, a team from PNG will go down to Tahiti for Oceania championships and I am hoping to make the team,” he said.
“This is the first gold medal I’ve received from the national championships. I have never won a medal in several bouts in my career,” he added.
Ome said he always complains about himself for not doing enough yet strives for a dream that he sees for many miles away and hoping one day it becomes a reality.
Ome finally reaped what he saw and is even looking for something greater that may transcend in his journey.
Pround Ome reflects on his sacrifices and commitments that finally paid off.
He believes there is no easy way to success.
“There must be consistency with the aim of achieving something that is not yet visible.
“You have to create it in your mind and strive for it till it becomes a reality,” he explained.
Ome’s dream of representing the country one fine day is slowly unfolding with two victories so far in his career.
First, he won his first international bout on the ANZAC day beating an Australian fighter, and the second one being the National Champions gold medalist.
He was inspired by Papua New Guinean Boxer and Olympian, John Ume as his role model as he aims to represent the country one day.
