Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation explains staff suspension

THE Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation in an exclusive interview with PNG Bulletin says the suspension of more than 20 officers is part of the PNGSF administration system cleansing exercise.

Acting CEO Micah James said this is to improve and provide stability to the organisation mandate responsibility, performance and most importantly, to eradicate the ‘No Care Attitude Culture’ in the Public Service.

Mr James said the internal process was carried out some six months ago.

“This was to identify errors, discrepancies and abnormalities in various administrative systems and processes within the organization and to correct them. By doing so, will improve the Foundation’s accountability, transparency and good governance. This will also add value in strengthening the delivery of our government’s vision “To Take Back PNG” confidently.

“Officers have been served with ‘Show Cause Notices’ against the offence committed to provide them the opportunity to respond to the charges. The disciplinary committee will adjudicate on these cases in accordance with the public service general orders and the disciplinary processes,” he said.

Meanwhile, an officer named withheld who was suspended indefinitely in 2018 by PNGSF (Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation) charged to have leaked information to the media exposing the PNG Sports Foundation of alleged mismanagement of millions of Kina said he had sought redress with the Public Service Commission (PSC) on the initial suspension and was advised upon a hearing of the PSC in September last year (2020) that the allegations against him cannot be substantiated by PNGSF, thus PSC advising him to be reinstated.

He said he has received another termination letter again stating the same charge going back to 2018 which he has already been cleared in 2020 by the PSC directing his reinstatement, thus questioning Mr James on what grounds this has override the binding decision of PSC.

Mr James in response to the termination of the two officers said he had corrected the administrative oversight which led to their termination and have withdrawn the termination notices respectively.

“We are doing all this without prejudice to anyone. We want to set a precedent so that the younger generation must not demonstrate complacency and weakness when joining the public service later in their careers.

“There is an urgent need for every Public Servant to assess our own conducts and dealings and to create a new image of a better public servants work force that is dedicated and capable to serve its government and its people during difficult times,” the PNG Sports Foundation Acting CEO said.
