THE Shotokan Karate Budokai (SKB) family has announced the appointment of Julius Piku Sensei as the new Head of Style for its Papua New Guinea branch.
The appointment was endorsed by the founder of the SKB style, Trevor Roberts Sensei.
Roberts is also the current Chief Instructor of the style at its Honbu dojo (headquarters) in Brisbane, Australia.
The appointment of Julius Sensei marks a significant milestone in the lineage of
dedicated practitioners of SKB and Shotokan Karate as a whole.
This appointment is particularly fitting, given the long-standing relationship
between Julius Sensei and his predecessor, Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei.
Mentored by Mari ‘Bera since his teenage years, Piku has flourished under his guidance.
Known for his technical prowess and tactical genius in the ring, Piku has not
only been a formidable karate champion in PNG but he is also the most capped PNG Karate elite athlete, representing his country on the international stage on numerous occasions.
Mari ‘Bera’s mentorship extended beyond the dojo, as Piku took on roles such as Karate National Coach under endorsement by the PNG Olympic Committee.
His leadership skills were further honed in administrative roles within local club, Rock Dojo and the PNG Karate-Do Federation Inc., where Piku served as Secretary.
With Carl Sensei’s blessing, Piku went on to establish the East Gate Karate Academy acquiring the title of ‘Sensei’, and continuing the legacy of excellence and dedication.
Reflecting on his journey, Piku shared a poignant lesson from Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei: “Up on the mountain, the view is great – you can see far and wide, but that’s where the wind blows its hardest. It’s a very lonely place.”
This metaphor, a profound teaching on leadership, has resonated deeply with Piku, guiding him through various challenges and reminding him to stay vigilant and aware of his surroundings and associations.
In expressing his gratitude, Piku acknowledged Trevor Roberts Sensei and the management team for their recognition and trust.
“I am deeply honoured by this appointment and look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that Shotokan Karate Budokai is known for,” he said.
He also extended his heartfelt thanks to Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei for his unwavering support and exceptional service.
“Mr. Mari ‘Bera’s contributions have been invaluable. His dedication and passion have set a high standard for all of us, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” Piku said.
Moreover, Piku expressed his appreciation to the organization members and sponsors.
“Our journey would not have been possible without the backing of our dedicated members and generous sponsors. Your support has been the backbone of our success,” he noted.
“Additionally, we extend a warm invitation to other Shotokan Karate dojos, martial arts clubs and individuals who wish to join us,” he said.
Membership to Shotokan Karate Budokai is now open. For more information, email eastgatekarate@ekere.net or call (675) 8238 6723.
