The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has congratulated the PNG Lewas, Papua New Guinea’s national women’s cricket team, for their outstanding victory at the Women’s East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Qualifiers in Fiji.
The Lewas defeated Vanuatu in the grand final on 15 September 2025, the day before PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary, making the achievement more memorable and of great pride for the country.
PNGOC Secretary General Desmond Kaviagu commended the Lewas’ performance, acknowledging their role in raising the country’s flag high on the international stage.
“On behalf of the PNG Olympic Committee, I would like to sincerely congratulate the PNG Lewas for their historic victory at the EAP Qualifiers in Fiji. To win on the eve of our nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary is truly special and a moment of pride for Papua New Guinea,” Kaviagu said.
He confirmed that the PNG Olympic Committee had big plans to support the PNG Lewas, noting that PNGOC would work closely with Cricket PNG to ensure the team was prepared for their next stages of international competition.
“We look forward to collaborating with Cricket PNG in providing the necessary support systems to help the PNG Lewas achieve even greater success in the future,” Kaviagu added.
The PNG Lewas’ qualification highlights the growing strength of women’s cricket in the country and underlines the importance of continued investment in female athletes.
The victory not only secures the team’s place in the next level of qualification but also stands as a milestone achievement in Papua New Guinea’s proud sporting history.
