KAMESWA United (KMW United), a local club competing in the Mendi Rugby League, has emerged as one of the top teams in recent years. Sponsored by Mt. Lemina Lodge, KMW United is known for its strong performance and has quickly become a powerhouse in Mendi’s rugby league competitions.
The club, which consists of young athletes from four neighboring communities in Mendi town, has made a name for itself by achieving significant milestones in various off-season tournaments such as the Kange Nines, Snax Nines, and their double appearance in the SHP Nines Tournament.
KMW United has also served as a launching pad for many young talents, with more than ten players progressing to professional rugby league, including standout players like Mendi Muruks fullback Myles Posu, who has been exceptional throughout the season.
2024 has been a remarkable year for KMW United, with the club’s A Grade, Under 20s, and Women in League teams all securing spots in the Mendi League Grand Final, scheduled for Sunday, October 6.
Head coach Lazarus Cajetan expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishments during an interview with Sunday Bulletin in Mendi.
He thanked the major sponsors for their continued support, stressing the team’s commitment to sportsmanship both on and off the field.
“As the head coach, trainer, and overseer of the club, I am incredibly proud of all three divisions for their outstanding season. Our success reflects the support we’ve received from our four council wards in the Kameswa community,” Cajetan said.
He extended special thanks to Mt. Lemina Lodge owner Mr. Bartholomew Yacop and Cane Constructions Managing Director Mr. Michael Ipa for their ongoing support of the team since its inception.
Cajetan also voiced concerns about the need for youth empowerment in the province and urged the provincial government to invest in development programs to promote rugby league in the Southern Highlands.
“I encourage our local franchise management to bring the PRK Mendi Muruks back to the province so we can establish effective development pathways for young aspiring talents, working alongside PNGRFL,” Cajetan said.
He added that increased investment in sports and youth initiatives could transform the mindset of the younger generation in the Southern Highlands Province.
Coach Cajetan concluded by thanking the Mt. Lemina KMW Storms supporters for always turning out in numbers on game day, and gave assurance that the grand final looks promising for the club as they prepared long enough for that moment.
