
The inaugural KCK Rigo Rice Cup has rapidly become a cornerstone in Papua New Guinea’s grassroots rugby league scene, offering a dynamic platform for young athletes aged 16 to 23 to showcase their talents.
Launched in November 2024, the tournament has traversed districts across Central Province and the National Capital District, drawing widespread participation and enthusiasm.
“We wanted to bring the game and its benefits back to the grassroots people,” said CEO McSteve Polly, emphasizing the competition’s mission to enhance visibility and provide opportunities for rural youth.
The tournament is structured into three legs, and the final leg being the grand prize challenge is currently underway since April 26th and is set to conclude soon. Organizers have announced that the grand finale is anticipated by June 2025.
Substantial Prizes has attracted emerging talents, with a total grand prize exceeding K300,000 that involves top amateur teams from the three pools to compete for. The prize money is distributed as follows: First Place (Major Cash Price) : K200,000 Second Place: K60,000 Third Place: K40,000.
Major sponsors such as Rigo Rice Limited, Kendekali Lawyers, and Construct Oceanic Limited have pledged their support, underscoring the initiative’s commitment to rugby and rural development. “We’re not just playing footy,” stated Rigo Rice representative Benjamin Walo. “We’re building communities.”
Celebrating Culture and Community beyond the rugby matches, the tournament celebrates local culture and unity, featuring traditional dances, food stalls, and youth engagement activities. As the competition approaches its final grand prize challenge, anticipation builds for what is poised to become a staple showdown in PNG’s sporting calendar.
