The Papua New Guinea Basketball Federation (PNGBF) has announced the men’s and women’s teams for the Melanesian Cup in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

PNGBF president Peter David announced the teams following trials at the Taurama Aquatics Centre in Port Moresby.

“Following the final trials held from the 4th–7th of September, the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) is proud to announce the final squads for our National Men’s and Women’s Teams, including non-travelling reserves, for the upcoming Melanesian Cup in Solomon Islands next month,” David said.

He said the final teams selection was the result of an extensive process across multiple events, including:

  • National Championships in Goroka
  • Trials in Mt Hagen
  • Southern Regional Championships in Alotau
  •  Trials in Port Moresby
  •  Performances in the Pom Elite Basketball Competition (backed by statistics)

“Players have been identified based on performance, Basketball IQ, leadership, discipline, and consistent player statistics. The selection was carried out by 11 independent selectors, ensuring that all aspects of the game were carefully assessed,” David said.

“While our men’s team showed strong competitiveness, it was also identified that our Women’s Team faced some challenges. To strengthen the squad, we’ve recalled a few experienced retired players. This was a collective decision made with careful consideration, in the best interests of the national team,” he said.
