SP PNG Hunters dynamic fullback Sanny Wabo will celebrate his 50th appearance in the QRL Hostplus Cup when the Hunters take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in round two at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby this Sunday.

Wabo, a fan favourite known for his skill, speed, and ability to create opportunities for teammates, has been a consistent performer since making his debut in 2023. He stepped into the fullback role after Morea Morea Jnr sustained an ankle injury in the Prime Minister’s XIII match against Australia, and has since cemented the No. 1 jersey.

His impact has been widely recognised. In 2025, Wabo won both the Hunters Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards. He also claimed the K92 and Hunters Player of the Match award in round one this seasons after an outstanding performance against the Rockhampton Capras.

Reflecting on his journey, Wabo acknowledged the challenges he has faced. “Sometimes I play, sometimes I sustain injury, sometimes I face family issues and community pressures. But despite everything, I remain focused on my career because it means everything to me,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to his family and community at Six Mile for their support. “Thank you to my big brothers and my community for the love and encouragement. Special mention to my grandparents—they are everything in my career and give me the motivation to play,” Wabo said.

As a senior player, Wabo is embracing a leadership role, helping younger teammates build combinations for the 2026 season. “We lost plenty of players, but the young boys are coming up. We’re looking at the positives and building combinations. I think it will only take a few rounds before we settle into a strong rhythm,” he said.

Hunters head coach Paul Aiton praised Wabo’s growth and influence. “Sanny is a leadership player and we’re lucky to have him. He brings energy to the team, and when he’s on, everyone is on. He’s grown into a leadership role and I expect a big year from him. I’m proud he’s reaching his 50th game,” Aiton said.

Wabo’s family and community are expected to turn out in numbers to witness his milestone appearance this weekend.
