FROM not being favourite throughout the regular season to now being top contenders, the Kroton Hela Wigmen have redeemed their Grand Final aspirations and are set to face the Wamp NGA Mt. Hagen Eagles.
The Wigmen quickly registered a two-point score in the early minutes of the first half, sparking momentum and building confidence against the Enga Mioks.
Despite Victor Ruing of the Mioks sneaking into the opponent’s try line following a missed high ball kick by the Wigmen, the game was fiercely contested, with both teams having a real chance at victory.
But it was the Wigmen’s determination and tactical awareness allowing them to exploit gaps and secure points. The vibrant crowd kept the energy high, with both teams feeding off the supporters’ enthusiasm. Kaupa Sipa of the Wigmen responded to the chants, crossing over for a four-point try at the in-goal area.
Just six minutes later, the Wigmen broke through the Mioks’ defense again, extending their lead to 20-6 by halftime.
Despite their efforts, the Mioks managed only one more try in the second half, finishing 12 points behind the Wigmen’s 20.
Wigmen Coach Ian Yaro expressed his pride in the team’s journey.
“To come this far and make the grand final is awesome,” he said.
“I just give credit back to the boys. We were sitting in the 11th spot and had to fight hard to make the top six.”
Coach Yaro acknowledged that discipline has been a challenge for the team, and managing it will be key to avoid unnecessary penalties.
With some players suspended, he is focusing on utilizing his pool of players to make a strong team against the Minor Premiership Hagen Eagles on September 15th.
“We’ve got two players out—one on suspension and one out of form—and I have to make the call,” Yaro explained.
“If one is down, we have players there we think they will be able to do the job.”
Yaro plans to stick with the current squad heading into the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Grand Final, making only minor adjustments where necessary.
He also praised the leadership and game management of Solomon Pokari, who he expects will continue to guide the team when they face the Eagles next Sunday.
