SECRETARY for the Department of Justice and Attorney General, Dr Eric Kwa, was formally arrested and charged today.
Dr Kwa was charged under the Criminal Code Act (section 328) and now detained at the Boroko Police cells.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed this at a press conference today.
Sika said Dr Kwa was alleged to have been involved in dangerous driving and causing death some time ago.
He said Dr Kwa’s bail was refused because of the severity of the offence.
“I have spoken with him (Dr Kwa) and explained to him that it’s a process that will take a while and he is very cooperative,” Sika said.
He said Dr Kwa is still innocent until his proven guilty.
It was alleged that on October 17 2022, Dr Kwa got involved in a traffic accident which occurred along the Hiritano Highway at Hisiu village in Central Province, that resulted in the death of one of the officers.
Dr Kwa and three other department officers were travelling to Bereina to attend an official engagement with the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, Dr Kwa will appear in court tomorrow.
