MADANG softball preseason ended on a high note signifying revival of the code after a long absence, with the 09ers defeating the Kalibobo Reds in the preseason grandfinal.
The tournament had several sponsors, including the Office of the Town Mayor, BMK, Easi Logistics, and Jacks of PNG.
The Office of the Town Mayor, being the gold sponsor, provided K10,000.00 to support the two-week-long tournament. The main aim of the sponsor was to use sports as a means to advocate for law and order in the province. The Town Mayor, Hon Peter Yalsy Masia, expressed his desire to use sports as a tool to discourage youths from engaging in unlawful activities and to encourage them to make better choices in life.
The game between the 09ers and the Kalibobo Reds was a close match, with the score tied at 8-8 in the fourth innings. In the end, the 09ers emerged victorious, defeating the Kalibobo Reds with a score of 15-8. For their win, the 09ers received a cash prize of K2000.00, while the runner-up, the Kalibobo Reds, took home K1000.00.
A total of five teams participated in the Madang Town Mayor’s Fast Pitch Tourney, with most of the teams hailing from urban centers. The only team from the rural area was the Rovers. The other teams included the 09ers and the Kalibobo Reds from Ward 3, the Kalibobo Classics from Ward 2 of the urban LLG, and the Rovers Torokina Estate from Ward 6 of the Ambenob LLG.
