In a thrilling doubleheader at the National Football Stadium on Sunday, PRK Mendi Muruks surged past the Port Moresby Vipers to secure second spot on the Digicel Exxon-Mobil Cup ladder, after round 15.
The Southern Highlands Rugby franchise displayed impressive strength, overcoming the home side with a 20-12 victory.
Muruks, led by prop Yves David and experienced lock Ismael Balkawa, dominated both in attack and defense. They outscored the Vipers with four tries to two, demonstrating their superior prowess on the field.
Winger Duncan Miall and fullback Myles Posu’s electrifying runs were particularly notable, creating constant headaches for the Vipers’ defense.
Despite a promising start, the Vipers, who led 12-10 at halftime, were unable to maintain their momentum.
The second half saw the Southern Highlanders in complete control, shutting out the Nation’s Capital franchise and keeping them scoreless.
The Muruks’ relentless defense and strategic play ensured their victory and a crucial climb up the ladder.
In the day’s second match, the Central Dabaris delivered an upset of the round by defeating competition leaders, Mt Hagen Eagles, in a decisive 38-14 victory.
The Dabaris’ unexpected triumph showcased their potential to challenge top teams in the competition, as well as displaying that central man are serious contenders of this year Digicel Exxon Mobil Cup premiership.
Looking ahead, the Mendi Muruks will face the Central Dabaris at Lae Rugby League ground in their upcoming round 16 match.
