NCD to host first Youth Summit in Port Moresby

By Zebedee Kumpio

THE National Capital District (NCD) will host its first-ever Youth Summit from August 10 to 14, 2024, in Port Moresby.

The announcement was made yesterday by NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop during a news conference at the National Capital District Head Office.

Governor Parkop outlined the mission of the summit: to showcase pathways to success in education, sports, youth empowerment, life skills, health, and the arts. The event aims to encourage social, moral, and spiritual growth while fostering innovation and leadership.

“NCD Youth Summit and Expo, hosted by myself and NCDC, is to engage the youth of our community and city in discussing innovative ideas that will enable us to have a program that will be engaging and empowering to young people,” Governor Parkop said.

The five-day event will bring together 200 youths from NCD electorates, 50 national and international speakers, 10 political leaders, 30 info booths, and 30 service providers.
The summit aims to connect various agencies, provide information on opportunities for youth progress, and foster networking and collaboration.

“It will also create opportunities for networking, so young people can know what’s available, what is being offered, what new platforms are coming up, and what innovative ideas they can develop to interact and utilize those platforms,” Governor Parkop added.

The Summit will be opened by Prime Minister James Marape, one of the guest speakers.
Governor Parkop thanked PM Marape for participating in this important dialogue.

“The Prime Minister has expressed willingness to engage young people, and this is a platform for the government to showcase its plans and offerings to young people,” he said.

The event, costing over K700,000, is funded by the National Capital District Commission and the Governor’s office through its Provincial Services Improvement Program (PSIP) fund.
Governor Parkop also called on his colleagues from other provinces to host similar youth engagement events.
