NCDC prepares for Papal Visit

THE National Capital District Commission’s (NCDC) operational team from City Hall in Port Moresby is preparing several ovals and outdoor spaces for the upcoming Papal visit to Papua New Guinea.

NCDC Director of Sustainability and Lifestyle, Mr. James Ume, announced that youths and contractors across the city have been engaged to ensure all necessary preparations are in place for the arrival of Pope Francis.

“At City Hall in NCDC, we are up to speed on preparations. We are responsible for ensuring all operational aspects of the city are managed, including the routes the Pope will take,” Mr. Ume explained.

He noted that the Boulevard and Unagi Oval will be utilized, with Unagi Oval designated as a parking area. NCDC is also assisting in maintaining De La Salle Oval to accommodate the influx of visitors from various Archdioceses.

“We are moving as fast as we can to get everything in order on time. Our staff on the ground have been advised, and preparations to maintain these areas well underway,” Mr. Ume stated.

He highlighted that those efforts are focused on organizing these spaces and creating car parks for attendees at the Sir John Guise Stadium. Responsibility has been delegated to youths and contractors to carry out work at designated locations, ensuring that infrastructure is in good condition, street lights are operational, and waste management is effectively controlled.

We are aware of his arrival on September 6th, and we are doing everything we can to support this event and ensure the city is ready to receive the Pope,” Mr. Ume confirmed.

“We are pleased to support the National Government as a province in supporting this significant event.”
