Gazelle District Pays K2.6 Million for Tertiary Students

GAZELLE District in East New Britain province has paid K2.6 million to help students attend colleges and universities across the country for the 2024 school year.

Last year, the district spent K4.2 million, helping 1,204 students in 95 schools. This year, under the leadership of Gazelle MP Jelta Wong, the district supported 1,269 students in 80 institutions.

This program assisted students based on their academic performance.

The support was divided amongst students under AES and HECAS Program together with the Self Sponsors. The AES program received 20%, while the ones under HECAS received 30%, as well as the Self-Sponsored students.

The 7 LLGs in the district were all assisted and the figures are being stated below.

  • Central Gazelle LLG: 362
  • Toma LLG: 187
  • Vunadidir LLG: 242
  • Lassul and Open Bay LLGs: 22
  • Reimber LLG: 104
  • Inland Baining LLG: 196
  • Livuan LLG: 176

Out of all these students, 12 under came under AES, 98 under HECAS, and 1,179 are self-sponsored students.

The funding for each area is distributed as follows:

  • Inland Baining LLG received K556,728 (the highest)
  • Central Gazelle LLG: K543,868
  • Vunadidir LLG: K516,543
  • Toma LLG: K485,335
  • Livuan LLG: K328,247
  • Reimber LLG: K246,123
  • Lassul and Open Bay: K56,653

This school fee subsidy program aims to support parents who are struggling because of the long drought in 2022 and the current high prices in the country.

This year: Gazelle District under the leadership of Gazelle MP and National Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Jelta Wong has subsidized the school fees of 1269 students in 80 tertiary institutions nationwide.
