PRIME Minister Hon. James Marape today praised Hon. Benjamin Mul, founder of Waigani Christian College and North Waghi MP, for his remarkable achievements in the private education sector, calling him a shining example of dedication and vision.
PM Marape made these remarks during Waigani Christian College’s 30th an 30th Anniversary celebration, held today at its campus in Waigani, Port Moresby.
“It has been 30 years since a small seed was planted, and today, that seed has grown into a magnificent tree—a tree of education that is nurturing and empowering Papua New Guineans,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“I want to express my deep appreciation to the founder of Waigani Christian College, Hon. Benjamin Mul, for his relentless dedication over these three decades. You, along with all those who have supported this incredible initiative, have achieved something truly remarkable. Today, the sitting Prime Minister of this great nation stands here to acknowledge your hard work and success. I am immensely proud of you,” he added.
PM Marape noted that Waigani Christian College has provided quality education to over 50,000 students since its inception.
What began as a small Christian pre-school, initiated as part of Mr. Mul’s university project, has now blossomed into a leading educational institution.
Reflecting on Mr. Mul’s journey, PM Marape said: “Back in the early 1990s, when many of us at university were dreaming of future careers or pursuing sports like rugby league, Benjamin Mul was focused on something greater—education. Not for himself, but for future generations. His foresight and commitment are an inspiration to all of us.”
The Prime Minister also recalled the humble beginnings of Mr. Mul’s vision: “In 1993, I remember seeing Mr. Mul start a school in a kunai, thatched-roof classroom. That is how passionate he was, and today, in 2024, we witness the fruits of that dream with this fully-fledged learning institution.”
Prime Minister Marape further emphasised the broader significance of education, saying, “Education is not just about earning a certificate. It is about gaining a holistic experience—developing character, ethics, and life skills. This is the kind of education we must prioritise for our future.”
In line with this vision, the Prime Minister announced that the Government’s Medium Term Development Plan IV includes an investment of K4.16 billion to strengthen the education system over the next four years.
In his speech, Mr. Mul acknowledged the Government’s support and the efforts of everyone who contributed to building the institution. He reflected on the challenging journey and reaffirmed his vision to expand the school into higher education, with plans for universities in both Port Moresby and Banz, Jiwaka Province.
“I have shown that, through perseverance and faith, small beginnings can lead to great achievements. With God’s help and continued support, I believe we can elevate this institution to the next level,” Mr. Mul said.
PM Marape also made a commitment to support the growth of Waigani Christian College.
“Over the next decade, we will produce more than 50,000 Grade 12 students annually, and we must ensure they have opportunities beyond graduation. Supporting private education providers like Waigani Christian College is critical to achieving this goal. We will work to realise the dream of making this institution a certified college or university.”
