Life often has a way of guiding people toward fulfilling their true calling, even when they least anticipated. And this is the case for Samantha Pera, a young lass from Hela mix parentage of Southern Highlands who drew her inspiration to take up Nursing as a career seeing her aunt fighting Cancer.
She enrolled at Kundiawa College of Nursing in 2021 and completed her studies in 2023 with Diploma in Nursing.
“My journey began at Paradise Private hospital, where I worked as a receptionist. Surrounded by the hum of medical professionals dedicating their lives to healing others, I felt a sense of fulfillment in my role, welcoming patients and ensuring they received the care they needed. However, it wasn’t until the day my aunt received her cancer diagnosis that my life took a transformative turn.
Watching someone I loved dearly to navigate the challenges of illness opened my eyes to the emotional and physical struggles that patients endure, and it left a profound mark on my heart.
Samantha recalled the moments she spent with her aunt in the hospital, feeling helpless yet motivated by the incredible nurses who provided her care.
She commended the nurses for their compassion, skill, and unwavering support which inspired her to follow the path.
“I realized that I wanted to be more than just a supportive figure in the waiting room; I wanted to be on the front lines, making a tangible difference in the lives of patients and their families. With a renewed sense of purpose, I made the courageous decision to pursue nursing.
I enrolled in nursing school, diving headfirst into the rigorous curriculum with a determination fuelled by my experiences. Every late-night studying, every challenging exam, and every moment of doubt was overshadowed by the vision of becoming a nurse someone who embodies hope and resilience in the face of adversity,” she said.
Samantha stated during her training, she learned not only the technical skills necessary for the profession but also the importance of empathy and communication.
“I understood that nursing isn’t just about administering medications or performing procedures; it’s about building relationships, being present, and providing emotional support during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. After years of hard work and dedication, I fulfilled my dream and became a nursing officer.
‘’Every day, I step into my role with gratitude and passion. I draw strength from my aunt’s battle and reflect on the kindness we received during her treatment. I strive to be the kind of nurse who not only treats the illness but also cares for the whole person, addressing their fears and anxieties while fostering hope.’’
Samantha’s journey from receptionist to nursing officer taught her that sometimes, the most significant changes come from the toughest experiences.
“I hope my story inspires others to find their true calling, reminding them that challenges can lead to newfound purpose, and that the heart of nursing lies in compassion and empathy.”
‘’As I care for my patients, I carry forward the love and lessons learned from my aunt. Each day is an opportunity to honor her memory and to strive to be the nursing professional I aspired to be one who embodies the spirit of healing and compassion while making a difference in the lives of others,’’ added Samantha Pera.
