AS part of this security overhaul, a Special Police Force with an anti-terrorism focus has been undergoing training in Bomana and Brisbane, Prime Minister James Marape says.
He said the government is taking a hard-line approach against armed groups and individuals involved in violence and crime adding that intelligence reports have already identified known offenders.
Marape clarified that a new law will give police authority to target these groups, whose actions are threats to national security.
“This is no small matter. If left unchecked, this threat could destabilize our nation,” Marape warned.
“The special force will address armed criminal groups with capabilities similar to those used to counter terrorism, ensuring that those who challenge the state’s authority face serious consequences.
He said provincial leaders will be informed and be involved in these operations, ensuring a cohesive approach that balances local and national interests.
“While individual interests are important, national security must come first,” the Prime Minister added.
