NTC conducts survey to address needs of unemployed Youths

THE National Training Council (NTC) is conducting a two-day survey to identify the specific needs and aspirations of unemployed youth in Port Moresby.

This survey, which began today, Monday, November 12, was initiated after the NTC observed a growing trend of young people participating in informal business activities.

This trend highlights the entrepreneurial drive of youth, as well as the urgent need for structured support and training to help them transition into recognized professions.

To address these challenges, the NTC launched the National Training Policy (NTP) for 2022–2032, which aims to bridge the skills gap and assist young entrepreneurs in moving into the formal sector.

The survey focuses on a range of key trades, including motor vehicle glass tinting, vehicle repairs, air conditioning gas refilling, carpentry, electrical work, electronics, and bricklaying.

Despite their resourcefulness, many young entrepreneurs lack formal trade qualifications, limiting their growth and integration into the broader economy.

“The data collected from our survey will be analyzed to classify unemployed youth into two groups: those with formal trade qualifications or certifications, and those without formal qualifications from training or educational institutions,” said Mr. Kinsella Geoffrey, Director of NTC.

“Based on this analysis, we will connect them with available government programs or scholarships to help them gain certification in their respective trades, enhance their training and education, seek employment, or start their own businesses. We will collaborate with stakeholders to offer a range of training, employment, and business opportunities for these surveyed youths. We hope to replicate this survey in all major towns and cities of PNG to benefit the youth.”

This survey is a critical step in profiling the hardworking youth engaged in self-employment across various trades in Port Moresby. By understanding their skills and the challenges they face, the NTC aims to develop targeted training programs that are relevant and impactful.
