THE PNG SP Hunters are gearing up for the internal trial match which is set in two weeks’ time, says Hunters Assistant Coach Enock Maki.
Hunters have headed into ninth week of preseason training including two weeks of Christmas break and have put in efforts in preparation for the trial match.
“We are having the first internal trial in week four. This is the second week now, and we have two more weeks,” he said.
Maki said they have spoken to the boys individually on what they needed to improve on, mostly on the team’s attack, speed and change of directions, including defensive efforts.
“If they get those things right then they are likely to be selected. So far, the boys are doing Okay,” he said.
As the grind continues, Inock Maki is assisting Hunters Head Coach Paul Aiton to have the preseason going on, after his coworker Puara Junior had left Hunters for a three-year contract with Agmark Rabaul Gurias as Head coach for this year.
“We missed him as he is being good for the last year, we all worked together until he moved over,” Maki said.
“We are having man down or shortage of staff but we are trying our best to manage,” he said.
Maki said they have decided to split the group into two to handle the players easily so that they can help the players.
“We are splitting the team into two groups because the lesser the number it is easy to manage and control the training,” he explained.
“We are happy with our training although we still have small things to fix. But we are happy with our training.”
Meanwhile, the two players who have been on internal disciplinary issue with Hunters for the past weeks have returned to the training.
“Koso Bandi and Alex max are back and we are happy because they are the leaders and they are leading the team,” he said.
Also joining the preseason is Morea Morea who was on a train and trial deal with North Queensland Cowboys for the preseason.
“Maki said Felix Beki and Seal Kalo have returned from injury and are picking up pace by pace, not hundred percent, but we are happy with their progress.”
