THE University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) held its orientation for the first-year students for the 2025 academic year today.

The orientation was in the Main Lecture Theater (MLT) at the Waigani Main Campus.

With the limited spaces in tertiary education in Papua New Guinea, the best and top students in the country were selected into the Premier University of South Pacific.

Deputy Registrar (Academic), Ms. Eshwin Enoch, highlighted the goals and functions of the Academic Students Service Division and welcomed the students.

“There are lots of students who want to come to UPNG, but we have limitations in the quarter,” she said.

“You (students) should know that you are not privileged but blessed to get a space to be here,” said Ms. Enoch.

She urged the new students to look after the opportunity of being in UPNG and utilize their time wisely since they are in a new environment and away from parents.

First-year student, Timerly Phil from Western Highlands Province who will be studying Psychology at UPNG shares her thoughts.

“I chose to study psychology because it’s interesting to study people, and I chose UPNG because it is my dream school,” said Miss Phil.

Another first-year student, Nannie Kagl from Chimbu Province who will be studying law shared her excitement of being in UPNG and also her message to students who are trying to study at UPNG.

“I’m looking forward to doing my best and making new friends. And my advice to students who are trying to get into UPNG is that do not be discouraged when someone tells you that you cannot do it. Trust in yourself that if others can get into UPNG; you can do it too,” said Miss Kagl.

The orientation was attended by hundreds of new students and this week is dedicated to the first years for orientation and registration.

Continuing students are expected to commence their registrations starting next week.
