Semoso becomes first woman politician to chair parliament

PARLIAMENT on Thursday witnessed first woman politician in the history of Papua New Guinea to chair discussions on the floor of Parliament.

Member for North Bougainville Hon. Francesca Rianna Semoso had the privilege to sit on the most distinguished seat as assistant speaker, facilitating parliamentary discussions.

A good number of MPs congratulate her for taking speaker’s seat, providing greater representation of the majority of mothers and women on the floor of parliament.

Semoso conveyed her appreciation and acknowledgement towards the Marape-Rosso Government for having confidence in her to ensure a woman politician take the responsibility to preside over Parliament Sitting.

Member for Bogia, Robert Naguri was the first MP to congratulate Assistant Speaker Hon. Semoso during the question time.

“On behalf of the people of Bogia and our party, I would like to congratulate you as the first female speaker of the Parliament of Papua New Guinea.”

Prime Minister James Marape also congratulates her and described the moment as “a landmark history for a woman leader taking the chair to facilitate proceedings of Parliament”.

“You come to the chair with a wealth of experience in your own right, you were previously speaker of the Bougainville Parliament and so it is not new to you,” PM Marape amplified in his congratulations message in the parliament.

“I want to commend you for your continuous leadership and service to your country in various capacity and in this morning having to sit on this chair.”
