Kua opposes amendment to NEC Act

MEMBER for Sinsina-Yongamulg, Hon. Kerenga Kua has strongly opposed the amendment made to the NEC Act by the Marape-Rosso Government on Thursday.

Kua, who is now with the Opposition team, believes that the amendment to the NEC Act gives the NEC an advantage not to subject to public scrutiny, criticism, challenge, and justiciable in a code of law.

“It’s very dangerous that this government is becoming increasingly opaque, non-transparent and non-accountable,” Kua said.

“We could not debate it because maximum opportunity was not allowed,” he added.

Mr. Kua explained that the bill passed to amend the NEC Act, gives unlimited opportunity where NEC decision cannot be brought to court for a challenge or have it reviewed by an independent panel of judges.

“Yesterday they made the Parliament less transparent, and today they made the NEC less transparent – two actions in two days.

“The government almost made them immune from accountability and that’s very serious for all of us.”

Kua argued further, saying if the formal legal systems do not give space to the people, they are capable of taking the law into their own hands.

The Sinsina-Yongamulg MP alluded to Sir Julius Chan’s words when he spoke in front of parliament stating, he is afraid in the near future people on the streets will protest on their own when seeing things going in their favor.
