HUNTERS have four games left to play and secure their spot in the finals of the Queensland Hostplus Cup competition.
Having beaten Ipswich Jets 28-22 in Round 18, the PNG team now sits in eighth place on the ladder. They take on bottom team Western Clydesdales in a home game at the Santos National Football Stadium on Sunday.
Head Coach Paul Aiton briefed the local media briefing today on his team’s preparations for Sunday’s match.
“We started training last week. It was a solid session trying to put some case load into their legs early so we can really line up over these next four weeks which is a must win for us,” Aiton said.
“We have been focused on this game since having a few issues with the teams that are below us on the ladder so for us it is a really important game.”
With Western Clydesdales sitting at the bottom of the ladder, Aiton is not taking any chances as the competition enters its final stages and every team fighting for a spot in the top eight.
“We respect every team and we just cannot take the teams lightly because we have four weeks,” Aiton said.
Aiton’s biggest focus in the remaining rounds ensure his players are in top form for their remaining two home games and two away games.
In preparation for Sunday’s game, Aiton has named an extended bench and the full team is expected to be announced during the captains run this week.
“The team for this weekend is really good. We are looking at hopefully Sanny Wabo will be return back for the game. He has been off for a couple of weeks so it is great to have him back,” he said. Coach Aiton is calling on Hunters fans to pack the NFS and support Hunters to continue their winning run to the finals.
