Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Elias Wohengu, has appealed to all provinces, government departments, statutory bodies, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to unite under one symbol-the Papua New Guinea National Flag-during the 50th Independence Golden Jubilee celebrations.
In a circular issued on September 4, Mr Wohengu called on the nation to hoist and fly only the PNG National Flag from 15–16 September 2025, as the country marks its half-century of independence.
He stressed that while Papua New Guinea is a nation of many cultures and traditions, the flag represents the unity and sovereignty of the country.
“The provinces are a creature and creation of Papua New Guinea, the sovereign. Hence, the sovereignty of PNG stands apart without internal equals,” Mr Wohengu said, urging that the National Flag be flown exclusively during the two-day commemoration.
The appeal also extended to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, highlighting the shared history since the country’s independence in 1975.
“Papua New Guinea began the journey with Bougainville in 1975 and, by grace, has arrived at and will cross 50 united. In light of that, I also appeal to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to observe this request,” Mr Wohengu stated.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, the call is seen as a symbolic gesture to reinforce unity, pride, and national identity at a milestone moment in Papua New Guinea’s history.
