The Department of Provincial and Local-level Government Affairs (DPLGA), in collaboration with the Department of National Planning & Monitoring (DNPM), yesterday convened the Emerging Districts Project Steering Committee meeting.

Themed “Positioning the New Districts as Model Districts in the Country for the Next 50 Years and Beyond”, the meeting brought together representatives from Jiwaka, Southern Highlands, East Sepik, East New Britain, Milne Bay and Motu Koita to discuss coordination and preparation for the establishment of the new districts ahead of the 2027 National General Elections.

The meeting is being held at the Loloata Island Resort, outside Port Moresby.

Discussions focused on clarifying roles and responsibilities, setting infrastructure and land priorities, planning technical working group visits and developing a resource allocation roadmap to ensure effective service delivery and institutional setup.

The expected outcomes include the successful achievement of Government’s district creation agenda, new electorates being fully prepared to serve people effectively by 2027, and strengthened coordination between national and provincial administrations through clear action plans and active participation.

The meeting continues today with further discussions on implementation frameworks and coordination mechanisms.
