Police Commissioner David Manning has confirmed that counter-terrorism operations in Papua New Guinea’s Highlands region are being intensified, with the appointment of Anthony Wagambie Jr as operation commander.

The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) are continuing joint operations in the upper Highlands, where a strong security presence has been established to protect communities from ongoing threats.

Commissioner Manning said Commander Wagambie, who has been recommissioned after time away from command duties, brings extensive policing experience to the role.
“Protecting the innocent men, women and children of the Highlands region is the priority of deployed police and soldiers,” Manning said. “It is appropriate that on-the-ground command of this operation be supported by an experienced operational commander.”

He said Commander Wagambie’s task is to coordinate operations, enforce the rule of law, and ensure those responsible for terrorising communities are brought to justice.
“Government has declared there must be zero tolerance in dealing with those who terrorise our communities, and our security forces are meeting this objective,” Manning added.

Further details on the counter-terrorism operation are expected to be released at a later date.
