Prime Minister James Marape announced that Papua New Guinea will collaborate with other forest nations to fight against Earth’s warming during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

Upon his arrival yesterday afternoon, Marape emphasised PNG’s commitment to supporting initiatives alongside Brazil and other forest nations.

“PNG will stand with Brazil and other forest nations to advocate for those focused on assisting in forestry conservation, which is essential for supporting our planet in the fight against Earth’s warming and achieving a temperature within 1.5 degrees Celsius,” Mr Marape said.

He highlighted that places in the global discourse on climate change are recognised from the fact that we hold subsets of forestry. We also hold subsets of ocean resources, the fact that we have 6% of the world’s biodiversity is caught with some element of authority being a hotspot or a resident of biodiversity.

PM Marape added that science indicated that Earth was warming and “we may soon reach a tipping point”.

“I want to emphasize the importance of these conversations, which are not only relevant to our country but also necessary on a global scale.

“If the ozone layer is compromised, harmful ultraviolet radiation will penetrate the atmosphere, altering the composition of essential gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen then there is no clarity for our children to live in,” Prime Minister said.
