The Papua New Guinea Women’s National Basketball Team launched their tournament campaign with a dominant 82–36 victory over Vanuatu, showcasing skill, teamwork, and determination on the court.
While celebrating the win, the PNG team also paid tribute to Vanuatu’s resilience.
The Vanuatu squad has recently faced significant challenges, including natural disasters and limited court time.
“It was an honor to share the court with a team that embodies strength and perseverance,” team captain Betty Angula said.

– Betty Wong – 15 points
– Jackie Asiba – 15 rebounds
The PNG team now turns its focus to regional rivals Fiji, scheduled for 11am tomorrow.
This is the third edition of the FIBA Melanesian Basketball Cup, following previous tournaments in 2017 and 2022. It is a sub-regional competition under FIBA Oceania, designed to strengthen basketball development and regional rivalry among Melanesian nations.
