A renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the PNG Fire Service (PNGFS) and National St John Ambulance (NStJA PNG), deepening a long-standing partnership that began in 2017.
The agreement reaffirms both organisations’ commitment to mutual cooperation, joint training, and co-location of emergency facilities, enabling faster and more coordinated responses to emergencies across the country.
Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo reflected on the continuing partnership, saying: “As frontline emergency services, we stand side by side in responding to the most critical moments affecting our people.
“Our partnership reflects the spirit of unity and purpose that defines public emergency services.
“Working together strengthens our ability to respond swiftly, share resources, and serve our communities when they need us most,” Mr Roo said.
Interim Chief Executive of National St John Ambulance, Dr Arabella Koliwan, acknowledged the Fire Service’s vital role in expanding ambulance coverage beyond the capital city.
“Our ability to deliver life-saving care beyond Port Moresby has been made possible through our effective co-location with the Fire Service,” she said. “This collaboration has been instrumental in helping us reach more Papua New Guineans.”
“We are deeply thankful for this partnership and reaffirm our shared commitment to strengthening community safety and emergency response across the nation,” Dr Koliwan said.
During the signing, Mr Roo was recognised as a Member of the Chivalric Order of St John, an honour that acknowledges his leadership and contribution to emergency services in PNG.
The Order of St John is one of the world’s oldest humanitarian orders, dedicated to the service of others through medical care, rescue, and community safety programs under the order’s global mission.
Its honours system recognises individuals who exemplify dedication, compassion, and commitment to advancing the St John mission of saving lives and alleviating suffering wherever possible.
Through this renewed partnership and recognition, both PNGFS and NStJA reaffirmed their shared mission: To serve, protect and care for the people of Papua New Guinea in their times of greatest need.
