FOREIGN Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko has welcomed the reappointment of Elias Wohengu as Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs for a second consecutive term.
The National Executive Council (NEC), through Decision No. 27/2026, has mandated Mr Wohengu to continue leading the department for another four years, effective from May 17, 2026.
Minister Tkatchenko said the decision reflects the Marape-Rosso Government’s strong confidence in Mr Wohengu’s leadership, strategic direction and service to Papua New Guinea.
Mr Wohengu, who has served as Secretary since May 2022, has played a key role in advancing the country’s diplomatic agenda. His tenure has been marked by the negotiation and ratification of key bilateral agreements, strengthening relations with development partners and promoting PNG’s interests internationally.
“Mr Wohengu’s professional wisdom and extensive experience have been instrumental in our recent diplomatic successes,” Mr Tkatchenko said.
“His reappointment is a clear testament to the Government’s unwavering trust in his leadership. Under his guidance, the Department and our overseas missions have demonstrated resilience and strategic growth.”
Mr Tkatchenko said the next four years would be critical for Papua New Guinea’s foreign policy, adding that continuity in leadership would help maintain the country’s momentum on the global stage.
“I look forward to our continued partnership. Together, we will strive to achieve the best outcomes for our people and ensure Papua New Guinea remains a proactive and respected voice in international affairs,” he said.
The Minister also extended his best wishes to Mr Wohengu as he prepares to begin his new term in May.
