PAPUA  New Guinea has taken a major step forward in its digital transformation journey with the official launch of the country’s first Sovereign AI Data Centre, led by Telikom Limited.

The milestone development marks a significant shift in how the nation manages, secures, and utilises its data—ensuring that critical national information is hosted locally, under PNG’s control.

Speaking at the launch, Telikom CEO Amos Tepi said the initiative represents more than just infrastructure.

“This is about sovereignty, security, and building national capability. For many years, much of our data has been stored offshore, meaning our systems and services relied on infrastructure beyond our control. Today, that changes,” he said.

The Sovereign AI Data Centre is designed to support Papua New Guinea’s growing digital economy by providing secure, scalable, and flexible infrastructure for government agencies, businesses, and developers.

Empowering PNG’s Digital Future

The platform introduces advanced capabilities, including:

      •     Local hosting of sensitive data to ensure national

control and security

• Hybrid infrastructure supporting both on-premise and cloud environments

• A configurable AI stack enabling organisations to build and deploy tailored artificial intelligence solutions locally

• Scalable systems to support future digital services and innovation

This development aligns with the Government’s Digital Transformation Agenda, supporting key initiatives such as digital identity systems, secure financial platforms, and strengthened data governance.

Driving Innovation and Economic Growth

Through strategic partnerships with Datec PNG, CloudSigma, and Docu Consultants, the data centre combines global expertise with local ownership—ensuring PNG is not just a consumer of technology, but an active participant in shaping it.

The facility will serve as a national platform for:

• Secure and efficient government service delivery

• Business growth through world-class digital infrastructure

• Local innovation and technology development

Mr Tepi emphasised that the launch positions Papua New Guinea to fully participate in the global shift toward artificial intelligence.

“AI is transforming the world. To truly benefit from it, we must have control over our data and infrastructure. With this platform, PNG moves from dependency to capability,” he said.

A National Statement

The launch of the Sovereign AI Data Centre signals Papua New Guinea’s readiness to take ownership of its digital future.

Telikom reaffirmed its commitment to evolving from a traditional telecommunications provider into a leading digital infrastructure and technology partner for the nation.

“This is more than a project—it is a statement,” Mr Tepi said.

“A statement that Papua New Guinea is ready.”

“Your Data. Our Soil. Unlimited Opportunities.”
