Papua New Guinea’s defence capability has received a significant boost following the handover of 2,500 Australian-made combat uniforms to the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby today.

The uniforms were officially presented by Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Ewen McDonald, reaffirming Australia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister, Dr Billy Joseph, thanked the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for their continued unwavering support for PNGDF.

“Papua New Guinea’s defence capability has received a significant boost with the handover of 2,500 Australian-made combat uniforms to the PNG Defence Force. This support reflects the strong and enduring partnership between our two nations,” he said.

Dr Joseph said the combat uniforms formed part of a larger commitment announced during the 31st Papua New Guinea Australia Ministerial Forum in October 2025, where Australia pledged to supply a total of 4,500 combat uniform sets to PNG.

“The initial batch of 2,500 uniforms, valued at approximately AUD 1.4 million, has now been delivered, with a second tranche of 2,000 uniforms expected later this year,” he said.

He added that the uniforms were designed and manufactured in Australia to ADF standards, but tailored specifically for PNGDF personnel using the Kumul camouflage pattern.

“Notably, these new uniforms include designs specifically for our female personnel for the first time, incorporating maternity wear to improve inclusivity and suitability within the force.”

Dr Joseph said the package included essential items such as boots, socks, shirts, trousers, and hats, all produced through a rigorous procurement process to meet PNGDF standards.

He said the initiative underscored the deepening defence relationship between Papua New Guinea and Australia, which has recently been elevated under a Mutual Defence Treaty aimed at enhancing collective security and regional stability.

“This support reflects Australia’s consistent commitment to strengthening PNG’s defence capabilities while promoting peace, cooperation, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region,” Minister Joseph said.

“The new uniforms will play a crucial role in improving operational readiness as the PNGDF continues to build its sovereign defence capability.

“Both nations remain committed to working closely together, with joint training and interoperability as key priorities.”

Also present at the ceremony were Australian Defence advisor Colonel Nick Trotter, Chief of PNGDF Rear Admiral Philip Polewara, Secretary for Defence Hari John Akipe.

The ceremony concluded with a shared vision of a safer, more secure, and prosperous future for both countries and the wider region.
