Evictions across the National Capital District (NCD) have been temporarily suspended as authorities await the outcome of ongoing court proceedings.

Police Commissioner David Manning announced that all police assisted eviction operations will cease until relevant legal matters currently before the courts are fully heard and determined.

Commissioner Manning reassured the public that no eviction exercises will proceed while cases remain unresolved, despite recent public discussions surrounding the issue. He emphasized that the judiciary process must be respected at all times.

“The laws of this country exist to protect the rights of all persons. In that context, I have directed that all police-assisted evictions cease until the relevant legal proceedings have been finally determined by the Court,” he said.

He further stressed that all individuals affected by eviction notices are entitled to have their cases heard in accordance with constitutional rights.

“Irrespective of differing views, those affected are entitled, as a matter of constitutional right, to have their case heard and determined according to law,” Manning stated.

The Police Commissioner made it clear that any future actions will strictly follow court orders and uphold the rights protected under the Constitution.

He reiterated that the primary role of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary is to maintain law and order, adding that any breach of his directive will not be tolerated.

“The RPNGC respects the legal process. Until all matters are finalised by the Courts, no further eviction activities will be undertaken by Police in NCD Command,” he said.

Commissioner Manning concluded by calling for calm and respect among all parties involved.

“This is a matter that revolves around respect for all of our people, due legal process, and the Constitution of the Nation, so calm heads must and will prevail.”
