Fiji beats PNG in opening match

Fiji U19 Women opened their campaign at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Qualifier with a thrilling four-wicket victory over hosts Papua New Guinea (PNG) at Amini Park today.

PNG U19 Women were restricted to a 40 all out in 12.1 overs, with bowlers Konio Gavera and Loa Ranu making early breakthroughs to put pressure on the home side. Despite efforts from the PNG batters, Fiji’s disciplined bowling lineup ensured wickets fell at regular intervals, setting up a low-scoring but competitive chase.

Fiji U19 Women reached the target in just 8.3 overs for the loss of 6 wickets, with Ishani Singh contributing a rapid 4 runs from 2 balls and Litia Lomani scoring 8 off 11.

Konio Gavera led PNG’s bowling attack with 2 wickets for 7 runs, while Georgina Tom and Loa Ranu supported well, each picking up a wicket and maintaining tight rates.

Match two of day one, highlighted the intensity and skill of the young players as Fiji demonstrated composure under pressure to secure the win early in the tournament. Ishani Singh was named player of the match.

The ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier continues with PNG aiming to bounce back in their next fixture. PNG takes on Vanuatu today (Thursday 09, April) in match four.
