The National Government has launched an independent administrative investigation into the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) recruitment process for Basic Recruit Intake 1/2026, amid concerns over governance and integrity.

Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleu announced that the inquiry has formally commenced, with the endorsement of the National Executive Council (NEC).

The investigation will examine allegations of systemic issues affecting governance, transparency, and administration within the PNGDF recruitment process. Authorities say the move reflects the Government’s commitment to maintaining integrity, neutrality, and the national character of the Defence Force.

Mr Pomaleu emphasized that a merit-based and transparent recruitment system is essential for strengthening institutional trust, ensuring effective civilian oversight, and promoting unity within the force.

He further noted that the investigation will operate independently, impartially, and strictly within its approved Terms of Reference. The inquiry will assess whether recruitment standards of fairness, transparency, and merit were upheld, identify accountability where failures occurred, and recommend reforms to prevent future issues.

“All members of the PNGDF are urged to fully cooperate with the investigation,” Mr Pomaleu said, adding that the process is administrative in nature and will not affect any separate criminal or disciplinary proceedings.

The investigation panel is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the NEC within the approved timeframe, after which further decisions will be made in line with national security and legal considerations. The Government said the outcome of the inquiry will be critical in restoring public confidence and strengthening institutional credibility within the country’s defense sector.
