ACTING  Managing Director and CEO of the National Airports Corporation (NAC) Dominic Kaumu has announced that new X-ray screening machines for Kagamuga and Goroka airports are expected to be installed and operational by the end of May 2026.

NAC purchased two sets of brand-new X-ray screening machines late last year at a total cost of PGK3.5 million. The shipment arrived at Lae Port on April 26, 2026, with installation at both airports scheduled to commence shortly.

Civil Aviation Minister Wake Goi welcomed the arrival of the equipment during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mt Hagen Airport Asphalt Overlay Project at Kagamuga Airport. He said the new machines will significantly improve passenger screening and ensure compliance with civil aviation safety and security regulations.

The NAC signed a contract with the supplier in November 2025. Manufacturing of the machines took approximately four months, as they were custom-built rather than off-the-shelf items.

Once installed, the new systems will replace aging screening equipment currently in use at both airports, enhancing safety and strengthening compliance with both national and international civil aviation standards.

NAC is working closely with the contractor to ensure timely customs clearance, transportation, and installation. The corporation aims to have the machines commissioned before the end of May 2026.

The NAC says it remains committed to ongoing improvements in safety and security across all national airports.
