The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Papua New Guinea, Iulian Buga, presented the Letter of Credence to the Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae yesterday (28th of April).

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries 50 years ago, Ambassador Buga is the first Romanian Ambassador accredited to PNG.

Ambassador Buga said Romania and PNG shared a deep connection to the principles of international law, the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and the rules-based international order that underpins peace and stability for all states.

“As a proud and strong member of the European-Union, Romania is ready to stand with Papua New Guinea in addressing common and pressing challenges, which will constitute guiding lines for my mission here: building climate resilience, protecting our seas and oceans, defending free trade and digital skills,” Mr Buga said.

He said that as the ambassador, he would place great importance on strengthening the bonds of cooperation and friendship between the two countries in areas of renewable energy, disaster management, trade, cybersecurity, capacity building, and judicial cooperation.

Sir Bob accepted the Letter of Credence, which Romanian President Nicusor Dan had appointed Ambassador Buga.

Sir Bob said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries have minimal engagement due to geographical distance.

“With your appointment, I am confident more engagement and cooperation in the field of diplomacy, trade and investment, education, climate resilience, and others will be facilitated to enhance the bilateral relations between our two countries,” he said.

Sir Bob welcomed Romania’s stated priorities – climate action, protection of seas and oceans, renewable energy, deepening free trade, cyber security, disaster management, education, and capacity building and affirmed that these objectives aligned closely with PNG’s national interests and development goals. “As you assume your responsibility as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Papua New Guinea, let me assure you that the Government of Papua New Guinea stands ready to accord you the necessary support and assistance you may require during your tour of duty in promoting and advancing of Romania and Papua New Guinea relations,” Sir Bob said.
