PNG U23 3×3 teams to Attend High Performance Camp in Australia

THE Federation International Basketball Association (FIBA) in partnership with Olympic Solidarity has sent an invitation to the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea through the PNG Olympic Committee to send its 3×3 U23 teams to attend the High Performance Camp in Gold Coast, Australia from the 23rd to 27th of May.

This was announced after the FIBA announced the camp for the open division who will be competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 

Both PNG U23 3×3 men and women teams and PNG 3×3 open Women’s teams will be participating in the high performance preparation competitions in their respective divisions in Gold Coast from the 23 to the 27 May 2026.

President of Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea Mr. David Peter said that BFPNG is happy to announce that an invitation has been sent to PNG to send an Under 23 3×3 team to Golden Coast for high performance training together with the open 3×3 women.

“The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), in cooperation with Olympic Solidarity and other partners including Commonwealth Sport and the Australian Government, is planning to organise a 3×3 Youth Training

Camp in Gold Coast from 23-27 May 2026. To enhance a high-performance pathway and opportunities for athletes, coaches, referees and 3×3 managers/developers from Pacific Nations in the 3×3 discipline, by providing enhanced local training and competition opportunities,” he said.

The BFPNG has been requested to send a maximum of 8 athletes (4 males and 4 females), 2 coaches (1 male and 1 female) and 1 referee to this camp. BFPNG with the support to PNGOC will be providing the names to the event organise within the next couple of days.

Given the time limit BFPNG will proceed into selecting the players from its current pool and supply them to the organisers. The Federation will assemble the players and do a rapid assessment of their game fitness during the week.

The under 23 will be the lead up to the Nations League in June 2026 and then proceed to China in the World Cup in September 2026.

The High Performance Camp is for the Teams that will be participating in the Nations League and Commonwealth Games will be attending the high performance training Cup in Gold Coast from 23-27 May 2026.

Moreover, President Mr. Peter is pleased with the performance of 3×3 teams in last year’s Asia Pacific Cup in Singapore and the Mini Pacific Games for the U23 teams in Palau and in the local competitions in the last one and half years.

PNG 3×3 Basketball team has improved its ranking in 2025 and leading to this year and onwards.

He said that one of the biggest achievement from the 3×3 Basketball team is qualifying in the Commonwealth Games – a historic and milestone achievement for the Basketball in PNG.

He further said that the federation will give equal opportunity to players across the country who meet the requirements and merits.
