PUBLIC voting has officially opened for the People’s Choice Award at the SP Sports Awards 2026, with fans across Papua New Guinea invited to have their say via FM100, SMS and WhatsApp before voting closes on May 15.

The PNG Sports Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to community-driven sporting recognition, announcing its continued support for the People’s Choice Award as finalists were revealed.

Speaking at the official announcement, Events, Marketing and Sponsorship Director of PNG Sports Foundation John Susuve expressed enthusiasm about the growing impact of the awards program, particularly its emphasis on community participation.

“It is with great pleasure and genuine excitement that we welcome the announcement of the finalists,” Susuve said. “The People’s Choice Award represents the voice of the community, ensuring that local values, achievements, and shared experiences are recognised and celebrated.”

The People’s Choice Award is designed to promote inclusivity and engagement across all levels of sport, encouraging public involvement in selecting winners.

According to Susuve, the initiative reflects the Foundation’s vision of making sport accessible and meaningful to all Papua New Guineans, regardless of background or ability.

He highlighted that community participation in decision-making helps strengthen social cohesion, teamwork, and shared goals through sport. “When communities are involved, these programs become more impactful, more engaging, and more sustainable,” he said.

The award winner will be determined through public voting, with finalists drawn from four major categories: Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, and National Performance of the Year.

Susuve also acknowledged the contribution of a guest speaker invited to inspire attendees at the awards ceremony, noting that their presence would add value and leave a lasting impression on athletes and supporters alike.

On behalf of the Foundation’s leadership and staff, he extended appreciation to partners and stakeholders for their continued support.

“The SP Sports Awards are more than just recognition-they are an opportunity to learn, reflect, and be inspired,” he said.

The PNG Sports Foundation concluded the announcement by officially declaring the People’s Choice Award category open, encouraging the public to participate actively in the voting process.
