NCD Governor Powes Parkop has congratulated the PNG Barramundis on their outstanding international performance, as the team returns home today after being crowned League Champions at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Japan.
“As the Governor for the National Capital District, I extend my congratulations to the PNG Barramundis on their remarkable achievement at the qualifier from May 8–18,” Parkop said. “The team has made us proud through their determination, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.”
He highlighted the historic achievement of four players — Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, Sese Bau, and John Kariko — being named in the Tournament Best 12, the highest representation by any team. “This is a proud moment for our country and a testament to the growing strength of cricket in PNG,” he stated.

On behalf of the people of NCD, Governor Parkop congratulated the players, coaching staff, Cricket PNG, supporters, and families who continue to stand behind the national team. He emphasized that sport unites the nation and inspires young Papua New Guineans to pursue excellence and national pride.
“I warmly welcome the PNG Barramundis home to Port Moresby today and thank them for representing our nation with honor and distinction. Your achievements have brought great pride and excitement to our people,” Parkop said. “Let us stand united behind our national team as they continue their journey toward the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”
The PNG Barramundis finished on top of the standings after the Super Six stage, securing the League Champion title with three wins from four matches and eight points, edging hosts Japan on net run rate.
PNG’s campaign featured dominant victories over Indonesia, Cook Islands, Samoa, and Vanuatu, with their only defeat coming against Japan in the final match. They amassed 751 runs in 100 overs while restricting opponents to 539, finishing with a superior net run rate of +2.1200.
