Prime Minister James Marape revealed that Government has already allocated substantial funding to support Urban Land Development programs aimed at easing long-standing land and housing pressures in Port Moresby.

“That program will create over 10,000 allotments in Port Moresby alone,” Mr. Marape announced. “Our intention is to make land available especially for employed Papua New Guineans and long-term urban residents.”

Speaking during a press conference, Marape said the initiative is part of a broader urbanization agenda designed to create a more organized, inclusive, and sustainable framework for PNG’s cities.

He said that the government wants to move away from ad hoc land dealings and toward orderly urban growth that respects both lawful ownership and the dignity of long-term residents.

PM Marape confirmed that the National Urbanization Office and Department of Lands are actively reviewing affected areas, engaging with landowners and communities to prevent unnecessary hardship and conflict. He noted that government has instructed a temporary halt to certain eviction exercises while proper consultations and relocation arrangements are pursued.

“We want to ask those who hold title and court orders to also have consideration for humanity,” Marape said. “Please consult Government first so we can work through proper and orderly solutions.”

He thanked investors and title holders in the 8-Mile and Wildlife areas for cooperating with government to seek balanced outcomes.

“I thank those who are working with government toward permanent solutions that are win-win for everyone,” he added.

Marape urged all parties to avoid confrontation and allow government agencies to mediate fair and peaceful outcomes.

“Government is not blind to these challenges. We are taking measured and responsible steps to ensure proper solutions are found,” he said.
