Auckland FC has claimed the inaugural OFC Pro League title after defeating South Melbourne FC 2-1 in the final at Eden Park.

Goals in each half sealed the historic victory for Auckland, making them the first club to win Oceania’s new professional football league.

The two sides entered the decider evenly matched, having each won one and drawn one of their previous three meetings. But with the championship on the line, Auckland rose to the occasion in front of their home crowd.

Fresh off the success of Auckland’s A-League side the previous night, the hosts started strongly. Striker Jonty Bidois used his strength to break past defender Jacob Eliopoulos before setting up Zac Zoricich, whose shot drifted just wide.

Auckland eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after South Melbourne failed to clear a corner. Daniel Normann lifted the ball over goalkeeper Javier Diaz Lopez, whose fingertips were not enough to keep it out as the ball found the net.

The goal sparked huge celebrations among Auckland players and supporters, marking the first-ever goal scored in an OFC Pro League final. Auckland nearly doubled their lead soon after, but Isa Prins fired narrowly over the crossbar from close range.

South Melbourne struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm despite coming into the match with 54 goals from their previous 18 games. Their frustrations grew further when Alex Menelaou was stretchered off before halftime.

Auckland continued to press after the break, with Bidois remaining dangerous in attack. Coach Luke Casserly later turned to his bench, introducing Aston Burns and Matt Ellis to inject fresh energy into the forward line.

The substitutes combined for the decisive second goal in the 72nd minute, with Burns threading a pass through to Ellis, who burst into the box and nutmegged the goalkeeper to put Auckland firmly in control.

South Melbourne pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Yuki Uchida headed home from an Arran Cocks cross, but it proved too late as Auckland held on to secure a famous victory and become the first-ever OFC Pro League champions.
