Australian Defence Force personnel and Australian Federal Police officers have teamed up with local youth in East New Britain to strengthen a growing cross-cultural partnership centered on community-led environmental action.
In Kokopo Town, the Okaokor Youth Development Program recently held its third monthly clean-up of 2026. The effort drew fifteen youths from Bitavavar, five from Raluana, four from NCR, twenty‑five walk‑on volunteers from the public and KMB, along with the two AFP officers based in ENB and members of the Australian Defence Force.

Program founder Ms. Anina Soloba, who launched the first clean-up in May 2023 using her own salary, now operates the initiative under Okaokor Collective Trading. Despite lower local turnout due to transport and communication challenges, she described the atmosphere as “very positive,” highlighting “meaningful interactions” between youths and Australian personnel.
Sponsors for the latest clean-up included Ms. Soloba, the Department of Finance in East New Britain, and the Australian Federal Police. She also expressed gratitude to past supporters such as Spirit of Kokopo, the Soi family from Bitabaur, Vodafone, Kokopo Beach Bungalow, the Elltopi Constituency, and numerous family members and friends. Their continued encouragement, she said, has helped sustain momentum for partnerships like Saturday’s collaboration with the ADF and AFP.
Looking ahead, Ms Soloba hopes the program will foster both local and international participation, building lasting connections. Organizers are inviting youth volunteers from all districts, with transport provided for Kokopo District. District Youth Representatives are asked to submit participant numbers in advance to assist with food and water planning.
The next monthly clean-up is scheduled for the 20th. More than a waste collection exercise, it is envisioned as a bridge between communities, nations, and generations.
