Hunters Chief Executive Officer Scott Barker spoke about player pathways and how SP PNG Hunters athletes could earn opportunities with the PNG Chiefs.
Responding to media questions on the future linkage between the Hunters and the Chiefs, Barker revealed that discussions began 12 months ago.
“We had three or four preliminary meetings with PNG Chiefs CEO Michael Chammas and recruitment manager Liam Ayoub. They are certainly watching our games and taking an interest in what we’re doing. As you would have heard from Michael’s comments about the London boys with the London Broncos, they’re paying close attention,” Barker said.
He added that the PNG Chiefs will continue to engage with the Hunters in the coming weeks. “There is an open dialogue between the Chiefs’ coaching staff and ours. I believe that relationship will only grow as the season progresses and as the Chiefs develop as an organization,” he stated.
On the PNG contingent currently playing for the London Broncos, Barker described them as “quality players” and admitted it was disappointing to see them leave. “Still, I wanted them to go and experience what it’s like to live in London. The Hunters are a development pathway, and that’s part of the journey,” he explained.
Referring to Chammas’ recent comments on the standard of competition, Barker acknowledged the concerns but stressed the importance of progression. “If they don’t move up to Super League — which we all hope they do with the Broncos — then I’d like to see them return to the Hunters, strengthen our side, and push for a Chiefs spot in 2028,” he said.
“The Chiefs are at the top of that pathway. We want to ensure we’re working closely with them, communicating effectively, and preparing players to be ready for 2028 — whether that’s in the top 30 or the wider squad of 36,” Barker added.
