Buimo Correctional Institution (CI) received a significant boost as more than 100 complete Papua New Guinea Correctional Service (PNGCS) uniforms were officially handed over, alongside major commitments for infrastructure and power upgrades from the Morobe Provincial Government.

The uniforms included shirts, trousers, belts bearing the PNGCS logo, maroon aiguillettes, maroon berets, and black polished shoes. In a historic first for Buimo CI, the institution also received its own ceremonial sword. During the handover ceremony, Buimo CI requested a counterpart ceremonial sword from the PNGDF Joint Force College.

The ceremony was attended by Morobe Provincial Administrator Mr. Max Bruten, the Deputy Provincial Administrator, and Morobe Governor Hon. Rainbo Paita, MP, who personally participated in presenting the uniforms and ceremonial items to Buimo CI officers.

During his welcome address, Buimo CI Commanding Officer Mr. Michael Winidia formally presented a written request highlighting ongoing power supply challenges affecting the correctional institution, officers’ residences, barracks, and prison command facilities. He appealed for urgent assistance to address frequent power outages.

Responding immediately, Governor Rainbo Paita directed the Provincial Administrator and his Deputy to take action without delay. The Governor approved K400,000 for the purchase and installation of a standby generator to provide backup power to the institution.

In addition, Governor Paita directed that a solar power system be installed as the primary power source to ensure reliable and sustainable electricity for the facility.

The Governor also approved funding support for the construction and rehabilitation of key facilities, including:

  • Construction of a 10-room female officers’ barracks
  • Renovation of the Buimo Correctional Institution Chapel

An initial K20,000 was allocated immediately for chapel renovation works.

Governor Paita reaffirmed his commitment to supporting correctional officers and improving conditions at Buimo CI.

“When I commit to assist, I give the order and it must be carried out. Development is about taking action and delivering results for our people,” Governor Paita stated.

He further assured Buimo CI that additional support would be considered as resources become available. For now, the Provincial Government has committed to delivering a solar power system, a standby generator, a new female officers’ barracks, and the renovation of the institution’s chapel.

The support package marks a major step forward in improving living conditions, operational efficiency, and service delivery at Buimo Correctional Institution.
