Prime Minister James Marape is travelling to Brisbane, Australia today to lead a series of high-level bilateral, regional and people-to-people engagements aimed at further strengthening Papua New Guinea’s strategic partnership with Australia.
The official visit, from 7–9 July, will culminate in the 6th Papua New Guinea–Australia Annual Leaders’ Dialogue, where Prime Minister Marape will meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to review the growing relationship between the two countries, advance shared priorities, and reaffirm their commitment to regional peace, security and prosperity.
During the visit, Prime Minister Marape will hold discussions on a wide range of issues,
including defence cooperation under the Pukpuk Treaty, telecommunications and digital connectivity, climate action, trade and investment, regional security, and pathways for Papua New Guineans to access skills and employment opportunities through cooperation with Australia.
A key feature of the program will also be the launch of the Pacific Rugby League Pathways Partnership, which is expected to create new opportunities for young Papua New Guineans while supporting the country’s preparations for the PNG NRL franchise entering the competition in 2028.
Prime Minister Marape is expected to return to Papua New Guinea on Thursday, 9 July. During his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. John Rosso will serve as Acting Prime Minister.
